Like an Arrow

One of the reasons I love tutoring young people is because they bring such a different perspective to concepts, theories and methods that I've taught for years.

Take part of a lesson where we were exploring the role of the 'dash' in a sentence - not only to 'vary' the range of punctuation, but to create and shape meaning. This is essential to hit the top level of the mark scheme at GCSE.

A student compared the dash to an 'arrow' - something pushing a sentence forward with great energy and momentum.

I thought that was such a creative way to explain how a dash can work in a sentence - like an arrow!
