  • Please navigate to the contact page to contact me, filling in a brief form with background context and information concerning your child’s needs.

  • I offer 1-2-1 tuition, as well as paired or small group tuition. The former brings the benefit of truly personalised support; the latter offer a more cost-effective solution, along with the benefits of discussion.

  • All lessons are delivered online via Google Meet. This allows for flexible scheduling, easy access from home, and the use of shared documents and resources to support learning effectively.

Online tuition offers a number of practical and academic advantages, including:

    • Easy sharing of model answers, exemplar responses and live annotations

    • The option to provide recorded resources where appropriate

    • Accessibility for international students and families based outside the UK

    • Online learning eliminates travel time, allows students to learn in a familiar home environment, and offers greater flexibility when scheduling sessions.

Online tutoring has proven to be highly effective and, for many students, even more productive than traditional face-to-face sessions. Numerous testimonials and reflect the success of this approach.

  • Safeguarding is a priority.

I am registered with the DBS Update Service. This ensures that appropriate background checks are maintained and regularly verified.

For more on safeguarding, please see the Safeguarding section of my T&Cs.

  • Lessons last for 60 minutes.

We spend the first five minutes checking in and reviewing prior learning.

We then spend time introducing new concepts, modelling their application before moving to independent writing

Finally, we end with a plenary and a brief summary of learning.

  • Yes. Consistency and commitment are essential for meaningful progress, so lesson slots are reserved at a regular time each week. This structure helps maintain momentum, reinforce learning and build confidence over time.

  • Transparency of pricing is as important for me as a tutor as it is for you as parents.

Pricing includes weekly homework, marking, the preparation of the lesson, resources, as well as the termly report and grade.

Unlike many private tutors, I hold membership of The Tutor’s Association, an enhanced DBS, Indemnity Insurance, as well as subscriptions to various tools that enable me to provide a premium service.

I am well-qualified and can offer the benefits of many years of classroom experience, as well as the advantages of full-time tutoring. I continue to pursue CPD at my own expense to ensure I am up to date with curriculum changes and pedagogy.

    In terms of pricing:

    • Individual lessons start from £75.00 per hour.

    • Group lessons start from £35.00 per hour, with a max class size of four.

  • Payment is collected via automatic card payment using the details registered to your account and processed through Stripe. Fees are charged one week in advance.

For more, please see my T&Cs page on Payment.

  • No. There is no long-term contract, and you are free to discontinue lessons at any time. We simply ask that you provide at least 48 hours’ notice prior to cancelling a scheduled session.

  • Lessons are typically once per week, although I have some flexibility to offer more during the school holidays, as well as the run up to key exams.

  • I provide tuition for GCSE AQA, OCR and Edexcel in both English Language and English Literature. I also provide tuition for A Level AQA and OCR.

In addition, I offer tuition for 11+ and 13+, having had experience writing these papers.

I also offer support with university admissions; as a Sixth Form Tutor, I have written references, offered guidance on personal statements and helped prepare students for admissions tests and interviews.

Sessions are carefully tailored to the specific requirements, assessment objectives and mark schemes of each board, ensuring that students develop the precise skills and exam techniques needed to perform confidently and effectively.

  • I set homework once per week and offer one piece of marked work included within my rate.

For additional marking, please contact me so that we can discuss rates.

  • I bring over 12 years of experience, having worked in some of the leading academic schools in the country, I hold Qualified Teaching Status and a PGCE. I have also examined for multiple exam boards across multiple exam cycles. Unlike some tutors that still work full time in schools, I can offer your child the time, flexibility and feedback that they need to make clear progress.

  • Transparency and measurable progress are central to my approach. Parents are kept fully informed through structured access to their child’s learning journey, including:

    • Shared access to Google Classroom, where lesson materials and tasks are organised

    • Access to live working documents, allowing you to see drafts and improvements in real time

    • Detailed written feedback provided directly on completed work

This ensures you can clearly track what your child is studying, how they are responding to feedback, and the progress they are making over time.

  • I have extensive experience working with students with SEND, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism, as well as students with EAL and those who are home educated.

If you are happy to share your child’s Individual Needs Plan (INP), I will carefully tailor lessons to ensure their specific strengths and challenges are fully supported.

Above all, I believe progress begins with a strong, trusting relationship. I take a genuine interest in each student as an individual and create a calm, nurturing environment in which they feel safe, understood and able to fulfil their potential.

  • Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged at the full session rate.

For more, please see my T&Cs page.

  • Weekend tuition is available to existing students. Please note that higher rates apply for weekend sessions.

  • Although tutoring may seem expensive, tutors mainly work in the afternoons and evenings due to the structure of the school day.

The work is partly seasonal, peaking around exam periods and falling off over the summer months. Unlike classroom teachers, tutors are self-employed, so without the sick-leave, paid holiday and employer’s pension match that teachers are provided with.

Hourly prices are in line with the cost of a golf lesson, or the rate of a local plumber or electrician.

  • Throughout my career, I have been praised for my pastoral skills. Making progress through tutoring is about more than just knowing the curriculum your child is studying - it’s about rapport, communication, building relationships and understanding them as a person. I bring inspiration, empathy and a sense of humour to every tutoring session, as well as an understanding of EAL, SEND and home-schooling informed by many years of classroom teaching.

  • Aside from the information given on my website, I can provide references given by my previous Heads of Department, as well as testimonials provided by former students.

A note of caution: in contrast to teaching, tutoring is an unregulated industry. AI has made the issue exponentially worse, with some tutors using it to write copy, generate images and write entire resources.

Do your research before you hire a private tutor: check whether they have a teaching qualification, how long they taught for, where they taught and try to get a sense for why they left. A DBS, insurance and membership of The Tutor’s Association are a must.

In terms of AI, it can be a wonderful teaching tool to help students proofread work, staff to build resources and small businesses to save costs. However, do be mindful of less ethical applications of it: fake testimonials, unedited study guides and entire websites built by AI copywriting should raise a red flag.

If it looks too good to be true, trust your instinct.

  • I have a huge interest in AI and education and even led the AI Humanities Hub in my previous school. AI is a very powerful too which will likely change the nature of education.

However, it still has major limitations when teaching English - limitations I have seen all too often.

Firstly, students tend to over-rely on AI. Whilst in theory it could be used it as a support structure - to scaffold and support critical thinking - students generally use it to do the thinking for them. In the short term, it may appear as if they are learning. However, in the medium and long term (and especially under exam conditions), its limitations become apparent.

In addition, English marking is hugely variable and highly interpretive. Even when ChatGPT is given the exam board mark schemes, it struggles to apply them in the way a human would, generally tending toward over-marking. Even when it gets the targets right, it fails to prioritize them in the correct order, failing when it comes to evaluation.

Finally, there is the relational aspect of teaching and tutoring. To give an analogy, ask yourself whether or not ChatGPT could replace your as a parent. You’ll get a sense of where I’m headed!

It’s a wonderful tool used in the right hands, but not a substitute for real tutoring and real teaching.
