Macbeth and Wider Reading
Having taught Macbeth for a number of years, I'm looking to set students some wider reading beyond the play itself. This is partly to widen my students contextual understanding (AO3), but also to develop their cultural capital.
My first thought was to set them to read another play (or production) based around the ideas of kingship, ambition and power.
Julius Caesar has always been immensely popular with my students and explores many of these similar themes. I have started to set this as wider reading.
So what other Shakespeare plays would teachers and tutors suggest that explore the same themes as Macbeth?
The plays need to be engaging, accessible and appropriate for GCSE - so Hamlet, Othello and King Lear are probably better left for A Level!
Do let me know - I would love to hear any suggestions via comment or direct message!
